Why We Leave a Gap Between Your Roof and Siding

When it comes to siding installation in Cypress, TX, success lives in the details. At Deskins Siding & Exteriors, one thing we never overlook is a proper 1–2 inch gap between the roof and siding—something we routinely see skipped by other siding contractors.

So why does this small space matter so much?

1. Prevents Moisture Damage

Rain, runoff, and snowmelt can wick into siding if it’s installed too close to the roofing. This leads to swelling, paint failure, and long-term damage—especially with fiber cement siding like James Hardie. Leaving the proper clearance stops water from creeping in where it shouldn't.

2. Keeps Debris from Becoming Destruction

Leaves, pine needles, and debris often settle in roof valleys. A siding gap ensures they don’t stay pressed against the house, avoiding moisture traps that lead to wood rot and mold.

3. Ensures Room to Breathe

Hardie products and other fiber cement boards expand and contract. That gap provides space for natural thermal movement, preventing cracks or warping over time.

4. Allows for Roofing Maintenance

Proper spacing makes it easier to inspect and repair flashing, shingles, and roof edges—without risking damage to the siding.

5. Protects Your Warranty

Hardie’s installation guidelines require a minimum 1–2 inch clearance from the roofline. Following this detail ensures your siding’s manufacturer warranty stays intact.

Real-World Repairs Tell the Story

We regularly replace siding on houses that are only 10-20 years old and several times a year, we're called in to cut back siding for homeowners addressing issues flagged during home inspections. It's a common issue—siding installed too tightly to the roofline. In some cases, we've even seen roofers cut flashing just to make it fit, a shortcut that creates leaks and long-term issues. That's why we always follow clearance guidelines from the start—because prevention is better (and cheaper) than fixing it again later.

At Deskins Siding & Exteriors, we follow best practices for Hardie siding installation, and we’re proud to protect your home from the ground up—and from the roof down.
