Kitchen Remodel & Whole-Home Renovation That Saved $8,000

Kitchen Remodel and Whole-Home Interior Renovation in Northwest Houston

A Smarter Approach to Remodeling That Saved Thousands

When these homeowners first contacted Deskins Group, their vision included a complete kitchen transformation featuring all-new cabinetry, removal of furdowns, significant structural modifications, and a more open-concept layout.

After pricing the original plans, we found the project was approximately $10,000 over their target budget. Rather than scaling back the dream, we worked closely with the homeowners to identify opportunities to maximize value without sacrificing the final result.

The solution was simple: preserve what was working, improve what wasn't, and invest the budget where it would have the greatest impact.

Preserving Quality While Expanding the Kitchen

During our evaluation, we discovered that the existing refrigerator wall cabinetry was constructed with quality materials and remained in excellent condition. Instead of replacing these cabinets, we incorporated them into the new design.

By retaining the entire refrigerator wall and surrounding cabinetry, we were able to redirect funds toward expanding the kitchen and improving functionality throughout the home.

We extended the kitchen into the existing breakfast room, dramatically increasing both workspace and storage while creating a much larger and more inviting gathering area for the family.

To ensure a seamless appearance, we custom-built new cabinetry to perfectly match the existing cabinets. Once painted and finished, the old and new cabinetry blended together as though they were originally built as one complete kitchen.

Opening Up the Space

A major objective of this project was creating better flow between the kitchen, breakfast area, and living spaces.

Our team:

- Expanded the opening between the kitchen and breakfast room

- Removed a window in the breakfast room to accommodate the new cabinet layout

- Extended the kitchen into the breakfast area

- Built a new matching furdown to complement the updated design

- Installed a new pocket door between the kitchen and utility room

- Updated electrical systems to support the new layout and lighting plan

The result is a kitchen that feels significantly larger, more functional, and better connected to the rest of the home.

Custom Cabinet Enhancements

While preserving the refrigerator wall, we transformed the remainder of the cabinetry with numerous custom upgrades, including:

- Custom-built matching cabinets

- New custom drawer systems

- Custom cabinet doors and drawer fronts

- Crown molding installation

- Refrigerator surround and decorative bump-out

- New cabinet hardware throughout

- Professional cabinet finishing using Sherwin-Williams paint products

These enhancements provided the look and feel of a brand-new custom kitchen without the cost of replacing every cabinet.

New Surfaces Throughout the Home

To complete the renovation, we installed:

- New granite countertops

- Custom tile backsplash

- New plank-style flooring throughout the home

The updated materials create a cohesive appearance from room to room while delivering the durability today's homeowners expect.

Living Room Transformation

The improvements didn't stop in the kitchen.

The living room featured dated wood paneling that made the space feel dark and outdated. Our team removed the paneling and installed new drywall, creating clean, modern wall surfaces that dramatically brightened the room and provided the perfect canvas for the home's updated design.

Whole-Home Plumbing Upgrade

As part of the renovation, we also completed a full house repipe, providing the homeowners with improved plumbing reliability and peace of mind for years to come.

While not always visible, infrastructure upgrades like repiping are often among the most valuable investments homeowners can make during a major remodeling project.

The Results

By strategically preserving quality cabinetry and focusing the budget on layout improvements, custom additions, and premium finishes, the homeowners saved approximately $8,000 compared to a complete cabinet replacement.

The finished project included:

- Expanded kitchen footprint

- Custom cabinetry and storage solutions

- Granite countertops and tile backsplash

- New plank flooring throughout

- New drywall in the living room

- Full home repipe

- Updated electrical systems

- Enlarged openings for improved flow

- New pocket door installation

- Custom trim and millwork

- Sherwin-Williams cabinet finishes

Most importantly, the homeowners received the open, custom kitchen and updated interior they envisioned without exceeding their budget.
